In-Joy was created by psychotherapist and yoga teacher, Sharon Hyman, after years of recognizing that so much of therapy work is about making good choices which reflect living a more joyous and meaningful life. Making the choice to get unstuck or to pull oneself out of a bad (life-long) pattern is not easy and requires guidance, optimism, being nurtured and being held accountable. Often patterns are formed in the body and mind which can shift with the right direction, instruction, and movement. This is what In-Joy is all about! In-Joy is moving patterns and making changes either through the emotional-body or the physical-body in order to have a more authentic and fulfilling life.

Sharon really makes you work hard. She is compassionate, but tough. If you are willing to work hard and take on your tough issues, I cannot recommend Sharon more highly as an individual or family therapist. It is not easy or comfortable work, but well worth it!

Sharon Hyman is often described by her clients as a very active, process-oriented and "hard" therapist. She is not someone to take her job lightly as she is hoping that she will empower clients to make changes in their lives that are sustaining, heart-opening, and meaningful.

Sharon graduated from Columbia University School of Social Work in 1995. For 5 years, she worked in the HIV/AIDS field in both New York City and Washington, D.C. both in the front lines working with families and children affected by HIV, focusing her efforts on grief and bereavement, as well as, supervising a staff around these issues, and doing local and national trainings. In her HIV work, she developed curriculum for children’s support groups, worked at grief camps, and taught supervisors about issues of burnout and ongoing professional development for social workers.

In 1999, Sharon graduated from the Family Therapy Practice Center clinical program and began developing a private practice which slowly expanded to focus on grief, depression, anxiety, self-esteem, infertility, adoption, and post-adoption and intimacy issues. She developed curriculum and designed support groups which focused on women’s issues, self-esteem, relationships, and empowerment. She taught therapists how to expand their businesses.

After feeling limited by what therapy can accomplish, Sharon began to use her own yoga practice to expand her notion of what yoga can offer her own life. Slowly, through years of working "on and off the yoga mat", she learned the true benefits of this form of spiritual exercise and now enjoys using it in her work with clients.

In 2005, Sharon graduated from a 400+ hour, yoga teacher training program at Willow Street Yoga in Takoma Park, Maryland. She then became an Anusara-inspired yoga teacher and certified by Yoga Alliance at the 200 hour level. She is currently going after her Pure Yoga and Anusara certification. Sharon has studied extensively about the mind-body connection and is currently blissfully incorporating the two modalities of yoga and therapy together.
